Evaluation Services
The Process
Psychological evaluations (also referred to as psychological testing and psychological assessment) are administered by a psychologist to assess various areas of functioning (e.g., intellectual/cognitive, adaptive, emotional, behavioral). Families may seek an evaluation to clarify a diagnosis, assist in treatment planning, and acquire accommodations at school or at work. Many large assessment centers have waitlists that can be up to several months. Unfortunately, children and families have better outcomes when challenges can be intervened upon as soon as possible, therefore, my evaluations are currently being scheduled as soon within a few weeks after the initial inquiry.
The first step in an evaluation is the intake session. This is done with only the parents/caregivers to ensure that adequate information is obtained prior to testing. During the intake, I will ask you several questions about your family and your child including their treatment history, medical history, academic history, family history, etc. You are not required to bring any documentation, but if there are documents that you think would be helpful to me (e.g., a previous evaluation report, report cards, medical records), you can certainly do that. If you are providing me with any documentation, please make me a copy of the original record. During the intake, you will be provided with several questionnaires to complete and return on the day of the evaluation. A nonrefundable $250 intake fee is required at the intake session. This fee will be applied to the overall cost of the evaluation. Although evaluations are incredibly useful in obtaining information about your child, they are not always necessary and I am happy to discuss whether an evaluation is warranted during the intake session. The intake session does not constitute a commitment to the evaluation, and if you decide that to go in a different direction, I will provide referrals. I am not currently paneled with any insurance agencies.
Once the intake has been completed, I will send you several dates to choose from for the evaluation. The evaluations vary in length between 90 minutes and 4 hours. The length of testing depends on which measures are used. Parents will not be able to sit in on the evaluation session unless the child is younger than three years and is being assessed for an Autism spectrum disorder. I ask that you bring snacks and a water bottle for your child during testing. At the time of testing, 50% of the remaining evaluation cost is due. Please ask me about an installment plan if that is preferred.
Once the evaluation is complete, I will send you appointment times for the feedback session. The feedback session is typically scheduled 1 month after the evaluation. During the feedback session, I will go over the results from the evaluation and my recommendations based on those results. The remainder of payment is due at the feedback session.
Evaluations do not constitute a therapeutic relationship. If after the evaluation, you would like to pursue therapy with me, I’d be happy to check my availability. If you would like to obtain therapy services elsewhere, please let me know and, if possible, I can provide referrals for clinicians in your area.
